Clerks ( * * * )
"Would you like to making fuck beserker!"
..."Did he just say making fuck?" Clerks X the ten-year anniversary disc just came out, and it's hard to believe that Dante, Randal, Jay & Silent Bob have been in our pop culture consciousness for a decade now...definitely some well-spent credit card debt by creator Kevin Smith.
The Acting: Amatuerish, but that doesn't matter because...
The Story: ...is one of the most consistently funny comedies out there. Guy wakes up to get the phone, falling out of his closet for some reason, finds out he's got to come into work at the Quick Stop convenience store "till twelve o'clock" to cover for a friend, and his whole day goes to shit. Everything is made considerably worse by his friend Randall and the local drug dealers J. and B.
The Direction: Someone--I forgot who--said that Kevin Smith's style is that he doesn't have a style. Maybe so. But there are enough genuinely funny moments in this movie and portable phrases--"I'm not even supposed to be here today!"; "Hey girls--hey sluts!"; "I don't appreciate your ruse."; "37???"; and the entire cousin Olaf scene (sampled above) are priceless. Sometimes the humor falls flat, but the nonexistent production values work like a talisman to continuously feed your low expectations, and there's always an amusing turn of phrase or gag around the corner. It's either Kevin Smith's best film, or his only good film, take your pick. I'm not sure myself. I haven't seen Jersey Girl.

Tredekka Rules:
- Rule 6: Over The Top Acting Award--Jason Mewes as the rambunctious Jay, +2 stars. Also, 2 stars for the nihilistically funny acting style of Jeff Anderson as Randal Graves.
- Rule 13: Spawned A Shitty TV Series Penalty, -1 point. Granted, about half of the six episodes of Clerks: The Animated Series were pretty good, but even they admitted they should've kept the swearing.
Tredekka Score: ( * * * )
